Grade 1 – Exploring Trees

Over the last few weeks, we have shown great interest in learning more about the trees that live around our school. We have explored different parts of a tree, how trees get nutrients, and have began exploring the names of local trees in our school yard.

Below, Vikhya engaged in observing trees that live on our school ground. She also explores the different parts of a tree, using loose parts to show her understanding of the structural features of a tree (trunk, roots, leaves, bark, branches, etc.)

Grade 1 – Sharing stories from our lives

We have been working on finding and sharing stories from our lives. We have been focusing on:

  • Finding a story in our lives
  • Starting with a title to tell our reader what our story is about
  • Making all sentences belong
  • Zooming in on a moment (Who? Where? How? What) to stretch a small event into a story
  • Showing our feelings by using talking, !, or feeling words, to show the reader how you are feeling through actions

We have also been focusing on experimenting with punctuation and using upper and lowercase letters in our writing.

I am proud that I used uppercase and lowercase.

I want to get better at drawing.

Grade 1 – Reading term 2

Below, Vikhya reads part of Frog and Toad Facts by Blaine George.

Vikhya’ a Reflection: 

As a reader, I am proud that I get to learn some facts and get to learn something. 

I am working on chunking words. 

I like that they are telling facts about animals. 

One thing I learned is frogs lay eggs. 

An interesting word in the book is hooked. 

Grade 1 – Spooky Shape Art

As a class we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have been focusing on composing and decomposing shapes – putting shapes together and taking the apart. Through building and moving shapes around, we have been exploring the different qualities and characteristics of shapes.

Below, you will find Vikhya’s Spooky Shape Art, where we applied what we have been learning about shapes to create and describe our art creation!

After creating our art, we recorded how many of each shape we used in our ten frames.
